North Vietnam 1957, Second Half
Another 1,000 guns and more cash are sent to the leaders of the PKI, in light of the sustained efforts by the right-wingers to depose them.
Even More Fun With Spies
More rumors than ever of increased Southern spy activity are piling up, so the spy corps is sent to investigate just how bad the situation really is:
2h6tmkup
The full picture has yet to be gathered, but it's clear to the government that there is a massive infiltration effort going on. Somehow, thousands of Southern agents snuck in under the government's nose, and their counter-espionage forces were unable to do anything. The anti-Southern frenzy stoked earlier in the year grows even higher, as does contempt for the espionage agency and its failure to prevent this problem.
Immediately after this becomes public, the nation's counter-espionage personnel undergo a purge of the incompetent and foolish, and are replaced with those who are believed to be competent. Some of the most brutal people the North has to offer are stationed in this group, allowed to use their viciousness to maximum effect to capture saboteurs and "deal" with them afterwards.
Meanwhile, the country's spies are put to work rounding up and punishing the South's agents. Since there are so many, it's not very hard to find a good number of them and either banish or dispose of them. In light of many Northern agents in the South being disposed of as well, more saboteurs are being sent south to try and replace them. Rolling for their success:
A few incidents occur, but the newest batch of agents safely infiltrates the South. This allows the espionage agency to retain a sliver of self-confidence in light of all that has happened in the past few months.
Military
Due to rumors that the South is planning something big against the North soon, the army is put on high alert. A draft is instituted, with many rural and immigrant men being summoned into the armed forces, especially the paramilitary. But that is not enough for some; a plan is being formed to arm every citizen of North Vietnam against the South in case of hostility. This is beyond the means of the Politburo, but private arms ownership and training are encouraged by the government (for those who are known to be loyal, anyway), and the arms factories are expanded to produce more domestic weapons and ammo. More artillery and other weapons are bought from other Warsaw Pact members, especially anti-tank weapons to combat the huge Southern armored forces.
In addition to the 500 Chinese tanks sent to North Vietnam, the government arranges to buy 750 more, all of them stationed near the border with the South. It seems the Chinese troops are not fully trained in the use of their tanks, so exercises are conducted with the North's own tanks to evaluate how capable they are.
The North Vietnamese tankers are just as able as their Chinese counterparts, it seems. As a result, intensive armor training is conducted to prepare the North's armored forces before it is too late.
With an over-focus on submarines in recent years, shipbuilding is diversified. More destroyers are built to supplement the subs, and the harbors that station them are expanded to handle the load. Since much of the flood of spies came in via the sea, patrols of the coastline are stepped up, especially around Hanoi and the far south of the country. Training of the Communist Marines continues as well. Rolling for its success:
Its development continues as it has earlier in the year; not particularly spectacular, but not completely discouraging. Because of this, the marine force is kept as a secondary concern compared to the other sections of the military.
The country's coastal defenses continue to be built up to combat the landing craft the North keeps hearing rumors about. Similarly, the important air fields across North Vietnam continue to undergo expansion, although the country's air needs have lessened with Soviet aid disappearing.
The Ho Chi Minh Trail continues to be built away from prying foreign eyes. Plans to expand it east are postponed after news of a massive buildup of Southern force along their Laotian border. Instead, the trail continues south into Cambodia, to facilitate communications and movement of goods between the two countries. 100,000 members of the VPPF, trained in jungle/guerilla warfare, are stationed along the trail, with orders to disperse and make life hell for the South if it ever invades.
But then the South figured out what had been going on right under their noses. They bomb the sections of the trail closest to the Northern border, completely wrecking it. The work required to fix this will take several months, delaying the entire project and hindering the North's infiltration efforts. The reconstruction efforts are given top priority by the government, and more troops and anti-aircraft guns are distributed to the workers in the area and to those further south in case the South tries again.
Order of Battle:
PAVN: 375,000 (plus 200,000 Chinese troops) VPPF: 325,000 VPAF: 50,000 VPN: 30,000 Total: 980,000 (Tell me if I screwed up with the Soviet forces, since I'm not 100% sure if their reduced commitment means all their hardware goes or just their soldiers)
Domestic Affairs
Despite the strain put on the country from army preparedness, the Three Year Plan is slated to continue on schedule. However, part of the civilian industry is repurposed for military goods. Ample subsidies are given to the industries to ease the transition. More infrastructure in the rural areas and along the borders is developed, and farms undergo expansion and modernization. Hospitals are built and expanded, and the education system also gears up for war, now strongly encouraging (all but forcing) its students to join the military, or failing that, at least to help the war effort in some other way. ···

USA, 2nd half of 1957 Commitment: 3 Indochina Intervention:While the 55,000 soldiers had finally left Vietnam, the advisers that were assisting in training and other areas in liaison with the Vietnamese military and government... They're still located in Vietnam and active. Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) steps up and makes themselves more prominent and noteworthy for the Vietnamese population to observe that the United States of America still maintain a presence, now smaller at the moment. Americans now are being paid back the amount we have owed them over the years in military aid. While thanking them for the thoughtfulness in trying to repay, Trapnell pulls aside a top aide to Diem and remarks that there's two things that came up with these repayments. One, military and civilian aid given to foreign countries by USA isn't considered as a loan but an outright grant. Maintain the alliance and work together in cohesion toward an international goal is considered as sufficient. Two, Trapnell is worried that the Vietnamese government is overprinting their currency in a misguided attempt to repay the Americans the "loans" which weren't loans at all. Considering the fact that South Vietnam has been blowing massive sums of cash on improvements, in regard to both military and civilian, it might be possible that the budget is running pretty deep in a deficient. Assuming that if Diem had been operating under the notion that the Vietnamese weren't in the red, he proceeds to warn that an inquiry into the financial department might be warranted. It's possible that somebody is cooking the books and deceiving the leadership into complacency. While wishing to not to be rude, Trapnell explains that since repayments weren't expected but still accepted nonetheless, the Vietnamese are given a big round of appreciation and many thanks for their considerate behavior, and a private offer of higher foreign payments aid in the next year (so to rebalance the books back into proper position) without causing the Vietnamese to lose face in embarrassment. In the meantime, the 40,000 infantry and 15,000 marines are currently stationed in various convenient locations such as the Philippines, South Korea, and Japan. Ready at standby to redeploy. Note: Equipment and men are still maintained in a regular rotation between stateside and overseas. The Hungarian Revolution:OOC: USSR had just posted their turn, so USA reserve the right to intervene in the matter of Hungary here, ready to throw down the hammer HARD on the Russians in the international diplomacy scene. The TL;DR version... America says: "HOW DARE YOU??"John Dulles fired off a blistering condemnation and it reverb around the world! Multiple channels of communication such as radio, newspapers, and television carries this condemnation to many masses of populations. Reaching even into Free Hungary itself, America makes itself heard on this subject. It helps that America were able to transmit its message across the borders from both friendly countries, Austria and Yugoslavia, to Hungarian ears. "Sufficient to say the invasion of Soviet forces onto the soil of a supposedly-sovereign country is all but in name a blatant attempt to venture into mid-century so-called 'modernized' colonization. The fraudulent and pretentious character found in the Warsaw Pact regarding to the non-Russian signatories and their rights to determine their own government is now transparent for the entire world to see! Surely Hungarians in Budapest, not foreigners in the distant Moscow (which is 1,826 km away!), have the basic unalienable right to decide what governance they shall bestow upon themselves. Yet the USSR invades on a moment's notice whenever Hungary raises the question of evils within Stalinism, and not a moment sooner! For what cause have the Russians in partaking this debauchery of human right violations? Naturally, it is none.
I tell you, that Aleksandr Vasilevsky who has fallen into 'retirement', he ought be censured with great shamefulness upon his name. No, I do not speak that his failure to oppress Hungarians for the sake of heartless Russians is what brings him shame. It is his failure to rightfully abstain from wanton violence and baseless cruelty. I recommend heartily that we all permit him not to retire quietly but be brought forward into the light of his crimes. But alas, he's only a mere puppet of the Soviet state with the coarse and vulgar Khrushchev cackling atop of the throne, beckoning his underlings to perpetuate a system of slavery upon others and then enable those others to enslave even more hapless weaklings in more and more places. Not stopping until all of Europe is darkened into a shadowy enclave of Sovietism! Nothing less would sate the insane bloodlust of Russians!
But we can bring those men to justice! Sadly, it's impractical to regulate upon indirect and hidden perpetrators who had contributed to this crime against humanity, but not Khrushchev and Vasilevsky. They must account for their direct participation, as it is clearly seen that they have stained their hands in deliberate bloodshed.
It is but a small grace that we have brave and valiant Hungarians who were able to stave off capitulation. I'm so grateful to speak on the behalf of free societies and democracies all around the world, we all thank your courage to make a stand.
Hungarians, do not believe the lies coming from the lips of the Moscow propagandist machine!
If you go back to October 23, 1954 when USSR had forced this Warsaw Pact upon you at the insistence of Joseph Stalin, read the these words on the original charter very closely and carefully:
'... reaffirming their desire for the establishment of a system of European collective security based on the participation of all European states irrespective of their social and political systems.'
Is that true on this day now?
We Americans had our doubts if the Russians were telling the truth or not back then in 1954, knowing that it's all likely that USSR created this international organization to merely bind your country and others in East Europe into a systematic domination over satellite nations, unfree to self-govern or to enjoy their own sovereignty and freedoms. But now... here we are, only four years later... ONLY FOUR YEARS, and now we see the ugly truth comes out into the open.
The words found in the original Warsaw Pact charter, I ask you, people!
Is that true on this day now? NO..." In addition to radio and television transmissions... in addition to newspapers printing... Several groups of civilian planes from charity organizations like the Red Cross (read, unarmed and decidedly nonmilitary) makes quick flights into and out of the country's airspace and drops pamphlets from the sky to fall into hands ready to receive. Packets of aid are also offered to Hungarians, delivery by airdrop. Northeast Modern Africa Proposal (progress thus far 13, leak tally 33) Round 4 (Prog, then Leak) XlT01E8WA 6 is rolled, and then a 5 is rolled so the progress tally is 19, leak tally is 53 now. Suez Crisis II: Electric BoogalooFirst, the Egyptian partTraveling from Istanbul to Cairo, Jefferson Caffery the American ambassador to Egypt who had attended as the representative to the Suez Canal Crisis international summit, makes a brief trip to see Nasser in person. Not too happy to open with forthcoming bluntness but it appears to Caffery that Nasser would appreciate hearing the honest truth. "Now, let us be frank... I do understand that you do wish to see that the Israelis leave Egypt by force, but this is your third loss to the Israelis, if counting the 1949 and 1955 as the first two, do you really want to go down in a fourth loss here?" *Angry grumbling from Nasser* "Alright, you want to make a show of force. It's up to you. I won't interfere if you wish to embarrass yourself in front of the entire Middle East. Everybody is watching you. Yes, everybody! Including the rest of the Arab world who would witness yet another failure staining your name. You be my guest and march those soldiers right there." *Much angrier grumbling* "Go ahead, that's what I'm saying. You have obsolete equipment from the old British days, and we know precisely that you're trying to go around our backs in obtaining arms from the Soviets. And well... we all know how well their stuff works out." *snickers* *Angry and threatening grumbling* "Oh we're not worried about Israel since you're only about going to be armed with some worthless garbage from Moscow giving you their cheap leftovers at an overcharged price to you. Such a pity about that arms deal, really." *Angry mumbling* "No, we're not going to do that. We already pulled some MAJOR favors for your sake with the British and French reluctantly leaving the Suez Canal for the moment. That was a costly move we made for you. So no, Israel will leave when they wants to, not when we force them to." *More angry noises* "Well, let me suggest to you that leaving the situation as it is for now is probably the least destructive thing for everybody involved. It has gone too far messy already. And besides, would you be interested in being compensated with the construction of Aswan Dam, and not to mention the cash infusion that comes with being an American ally?" *Pause of silence* The Israeli partA direct phone call from the White House came to Ben-Gurion. President Eisenhower apologizes for not being able to travel abroad at this particular sensitive time or to send a person Tel Aviv immediately. Nonetheless, America uphold her promises to the Jews and their homeland. No attempt is made to force Israel to abandon the Sinai. Fair-Haired Boy USA tentatively agrees to a possible roundtable talk for the China situation. At the same time, a communique is sent to Trapnell to pass on to SV, stating that USA hasn't forgotten about them, and that we might be able to find a way to resolve the island question peacefully for the Vietnamese. Military ResearchUSS George Washington (SSBN-598) is going to be the United States's first operational ballistic missile submarine. George Washington's keel was laid down at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, Groton, Connecticut on 1 November 1957. George Washington was originally laid down as the attack submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589). During construction, she was lengthened by the insertion of a 130 ft (40 m)-long ballistic missile section and renamed George Washington; another submarine under construction at the time received the original name and hull number. Inside George Washington's forward escape hatch, a plaque remained bearing her original name. Because the ballistic missile compartment design of George Washington was intended to be reused in later ship classes, the section inserted into George Washington was designed with a deeper test depth rating than the rest of the submarine. Rolling for a success of the construction modifications to accommodate the future planning, 1-3 a failure to establish modulablity/depth test rating, 4-6 a success. A 4 is rolled. The effect is: The changes made to the design for the ballistic missile compartment did make it an adaptable module and holds up well against the pressure in tests of considerable depth.Nuclear production in many various sites all over USA has been running fairly smoothly at an expanded capacity, at a pace well above the Soviets', but a few others were still lagging behind since 1953. So thus, National Security Council (NSC) wishes to expand some of them. Rolling for extent of success, 5-6, a solid success, 3-4, a modest improvement was successfully made, 1-2 not so much of a success, eruk A 6 is rolled. The effect is: Multi-level initiatives are made in improving the different aspects of nuclear production, processing, storing and disposal.Such as: Hanford Site in Richland, Washington improves in plutonium production or: Nevada Test Site, expands to Yucca Mountain for nuclear waste disposal and: Rocky Flats Plant near Denver, CO, better components fabrication
EDIT: See the modification made to the section regarding Hungary ···

People's Republic of China, 2nd Half, 1957 Commitment Level: 4 Sino-Soviet Split
Tensions between the PRC and the USSR, which became apparent as early as the Haikou Incident, seems to have finally reached fever-pitch now. In response to Georgy Malenkov's accusations against the People's Republic of China, many members of the CPC has demanded to cut ties with the Soviets, saying that the Soviets have abandoned Communist ideals. The Chairman Mao Zedong seems to agree with his comrades. In a speech to the Politburo, he says, However, it seems Mao's decision was not purely ideological. Privately, he discusses about the clear lack of support for Khrushchev, with whom he had signed the Pact of Moscow, and a possible change of leadership to Molotov. He expresses his concerns that Molotov would make talks to reunite China difficult with his closest friends. Soviet troops, officials and advisors in China are asked to leave the country, and Soviet bases are to be removed. Meanwhile, Chinese professionals studying in the Soviet Union return to China with what knowledge they have gathered. China would also no longer receive Soviet economic aid. The Taiwan Reconciliation
Mao Zedong agrees to hold the roundtable talks with the USA and the ROC As a show of goodwill, Mao Zedong allows the Muslim Nationalist insurgents, comprised of many members of the Ma Clique, in northwest China to leave for Taiwan if they so choose. The ROC will be allowed to organise transport for them. First Five-Year Plan
Progress of Industrialisation: UwWYOrUEDevelopment goes well... considering the circumstances. 18/40 Farming families continue to be encouraged to cooperate with each other on farming. More and more accept the idea, increasing agricultural productivity. The police attempt to mop up the rest of the private businesses. A minimum of 3 is required to complete. The operation is successful, and the entire nation is on state capitalism. Military ResearchThe Chinese T-54/55 prototype that was developed last year is undergoing tests. Should the results prove satisfactory, it will be immediately put to mass production. A minimum of 2 is required for satisfactory results. (It is a Soviet copy after all)The prototype performs splendidly! The engineers have done well, significantly improving on the tank, now called the T59. China's first Main Battle Tank is now in production. A Type 59Indochina
Mao assures Ho Chi Minh ( Santa Anna ) that the PRC will continue to support North Vietnam no matter their alignment. In order to keep the PVA battle-ready, Grand Marshal Peng Dehuai tasks Chen Geng with training the soldiers. Progress is made. But according to the generals, it will be a while, at least another half a year, before they are truly prepared. 4/10 Counter Espionage
Agents in South Vietnam begin investigating what appears to be a "vast spy network" in Vietnam, controlled by the South Vietnamese government, though they are uncertain of any details. Further digging shows that the South Vietnamese are deploying many, many spies to North Vietnam. However, no clear estimate of the scale of this operation can be provided yet. Peng Dehuai brings in counterintelligence officers to crack down on hostile spy activities in order to secure Chinese operations in North Vietnam. Meanwhile, agents arriving in Laos and Cambodia make contact with the Pathet Lao and the Khmer Rouge, setting up networks there. ·····

Правда (1957 2nd Half)
Commitment: IV-> III->II (Will become III next turn) OOC: I'm pretty much better now. Thank y'all for your concerns! If my post's crappy in any way, don't hesitate to tag me. The Hungarian Revolution(Exclusive, only in Pravda)Marshal Aleksandr Vasilevsky, in charge of the operations in Hungary seeks to occupy the lands of the Hungarians through massive firepower. Vasilevsky's informal letter to Khruschev says as follows:Vasilevsky executes the operation, codenamed 'Operation Durova' with much confidence.{Spoiler}{Dice Rolls}mTHR0GcF The Hungarian people fought bravely, and Vasilevsky could do nothing but to retreat back to Soviet borders. This surely is a shock to to the people of the Soviet Union, and a disgrace to the proletarian masses. Marshal Vasilevsky, in charge of the operation, takes responsibility from this and retires from the battlefield. Some vile schemers say this was due to the death threat from the NKVD, but this is definately not true. Khruschev awarded him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union due to his services from the Great Patriotic War. After his retirement, Marshal Vasily Chuikov came in charge of the 2nd Cavalry Corps, and took the obvious title of Supreme Commander of the Hungarian Revolutionary Front.
Khruschev and MolotovKhruschev, from the defeat at Hungary lost the majority of his supporters, who now supports his greatest political rival: Vyacheslav Molotov. They urge him to cooperate with the Red Army and the NKVD to overthrough the current regime and lead the revolution himself. He, however, being a man of caution refuses politely and decides to gain more support through the means of what he did best: Making speeches. He immediately rushes to the Red Square at the Fifth of August, the date of Engels' death. Hundreds of thousands gather at the Red Square to both remember Engels for his great deed to the revolution, and to listen to what this man has to say about the recent defeat.
A huge applause comes from the crowd, who is wildly chanting the name 'Molotov'. Several hundreds of angry citizens storm towards the Kremlin. Molotov does not take any actions against the angry mob. They, who tried to break into the residency of Nikita Khrushchev were brutally shot down by the Red Army, furtherly decreasing the support for Nikita Khrushchev. Now, public insults towards the Commisar and prasises for Molotov can be heard publically in the streets of Moscow. Some says even the Army despisees of their supreme leader. Chinese Relations Khrushcehv is furious of the betrayal of Mao Zedong. He makes an angry speech for all of the world to hear. He later writes a private letter to Mao Zedong. (OOC information for all except Carlos III )
IndochinaDue to the recent crisis in Moscow (Including the 'Blood of the Red Square' incident) Soviet troops in Indochina were to return to Russia. But in case of a crisis that may happen in Indochina, Soviet troops are to be stationed in Vladivostok. Soviets, now stationed in Vladivostok, is as follows:
Soviet Union Forces in Vladivostok Chief of Operation: Marshal Georgy K. Zhukov Chief of Army Operation: Marshal Leonid A. Govorov Chief of Naval Operation: Admiral Sergey G. Gorshkov Chief of Air Operation: Marshal Aleksandr A. Novikov
Division Template Regular Infantry=5,000 Marine=1,000 Airborne=1,000 Tanks=500(1,500 men operating) Artillery=500(1,500 men operating) Total: 10,000 Total No. Of Army forces: 10,000*10=100,000
Naval Forces 5 Cruisers 15 Submarines 30 Destroyers
Air Forces 600 MiG-15s (64th Fighter Aviation Corps)
Space Race OOC: LAIKA'S FINALLY GOING TO BE IN ORBIT! LAAAAAIIIIIIIKKKKKKAAAAA! The Soviet scientists finally managed to develop a spacecraft stable enough for a living creature to breath and live inside. They promised the supreme leader that the dog 'Shall not die in orbit', and Khrushchev, a dog person, smiled and named the dog himself; Laika. He gave the dog a kiss in the head, which the dog growled. Nikita, who seemed to not care about the dog's flashing teeth, told the lead scientist Korolev that this "Will be a great oppertunity to prove Communism's superiority over Capitalism". Korolev smiled, and Nikita promised to show up at the launching site. Laika, clearly not being able to survive more than a week in space, was to be launched, orbit around the Earth for several hours, then return to Earth. December Third came and Laika prepared its launch to space. Molotov requested a speech, which Khrushchev had to accept due to the immense popularity of his rival. The following is the speech made by Molotov.
The people, including Nikita, at the launching site all burst out in laughter, and the countdown began.
The spacecraft flew out in space! {Spoiler}{Roll for Laika.}Since all of y'all want Laika to be alive(At least I assume so), there will be no 'Laika Dies' option. 1-3 for sick Laika 4-6 for perfectly fine Laika
Soon, the first transmission from Sputnik II arrived to Moscow.
Everybody, watching the big-screen broadcast in the Red Square all prayed for Laika's well being. Even Molotov, an atheist himself joined in the prayers. Soon, every man in the Red Square were praying to whatever god they felt closest to. Laika had 8 more hours to stay in space, and all he had to do was to survive the flight. After that, the greatest vets in Russia could take care of the sick dog.
8 hours later, the spacecraft began to dive into the Earth's atmosphere. The craft, rumbling contained the poor dog, weak but alive. According to Sovie calculation, the landing spot would be in the Southern China Sea. All the greatest vetenarians near were called for help, which they obliged to. Laika was no longer just a dog, it was a symobol of Communist supeority.
Finally, Laika made the landing, panting from burns and bruises. The vetenarians took care of the injuries swiftly, and Laika was sent back to Moscow. Weak, yes. But definately alive.
Glorious Weapon Development
R-7 Sputnik PS
Soviet scientists research for the military use of the rocket used for Laika's launch. This could potentially become a gigantic threat to the states, becaust the rocket has the potential to leave the atmosphere, then reach back into atmosphere, delivering the nuclear head in the White House's front door. Nikita loves this idea and decides to fund the project.
{Spoiler}{Roll}A roll of 3+ for success seems fair as the rocket's already developed for the Space Race.
The rocket, in the test flight literally exploded in midair. Using it for military use seems like a bad idea at the moment. So no rockets. T-64The military demanded a new type of panzer unit to be researched. Khrushchev agrees with the need of a new panzer unit, and request the prototype to be ready by 1958, at the latest. The scientists quickly start the development, to satisfy the commissar's needs.
They finally develop a nice prototype, and are ready to show it to the Commissar. {Spoiler}{Roll}1-3 for failure 4-6 for success
The engine of the prototype did not start, and the leader of the Soviet Union's cheek started to turn red. Another failure for the scientists. ·····

1958, First HalfThe year 1958 rolls in, and with it events, events, scandals, events, and events. Party GamesParticipants: USSR The CPSU has at last realized that enough is enough, and Khrushchev must go. Humiliated, he resigns and goes home to a quiet retirement, rather than face the final indignity of a vote out. Molotov is the obvious candidate to succeed him, but there are those who prefer to call upon Zhukov instead, arguing that the times call for a military man in the lead. Finally, there are those who propose Georgy Malenkov as a compromise candidate. It is assumed that the weaker Malenkov would be enough to postpone a struggle between Molotov's camp and Zhukov's, but not avoid it entirely. The USSR may choose whichever leader it wants - Malenkov, Molotov, or Zhukov. Each choice will face a different set of challenges in the future. Up in flamesParticipants: the Vietnams Large-scale fires devastate the forests along the border between North and South Vietnam, causing substantial death and destruction. Depending on the winds, smoke covers various parts of Indonesia. In the initial chaos, various newspaper editors and rumor mills, noting the espionage-related mishegoss going on, blame one or the other of the Vietnams, or some external power. Naturally, these theories catch on like wildfire (pun intended) and contribute to public opinion. Both Vietnams, or any other power, may react as they see fit. Mint on the MekongParticipants: SV, maybe US The "Miracle on the Mekong" is indeed going along, but it is not without complications. Inflation is noted at 80% by South Vietnamese economists, who warn in private reports to the government that it may yet rise well into the triple digits. The mainstream Keynesian prescription from western-educated economists (i.e. the vast majority of them) at this time period is to rein in government spending and/or raise taxes, though there are those who suggest alternative measures. South Vietnam should react as it sees fit. If America deems it right to step in, it may do so - with SV's consent, of course. Chinese ReconciliationParticipants: USA, PRC The negotiations begin. The government of the ROC formally insists on total equality between the Taipei and Beijing regimes in any united state, but privately signals a willingness to accept subordinate status, provided it is granted a robust, full autonomy, complete with its own military and broad legislative power over Taiwan and the other islands. Of course, disengagement from the USSR is a must. China and the US should react as they see fit. Rusting CurtainParticipants: USA, USSR Hungary's success has emboldened it mightily. As the European Economic Community is founded by Western European powers, Hungary contemplates petitioning to join it. Hungary, however, still fears the USSR, and as such makes overtures in secret to see whether the west would be willing to actively defend it. In parallel, rumblings are heard in countries of the Soviet bloc ranging from Czechoslovakia to Bulgaria. The US and USSR should react as they see fit. I will add the European response at the next phase. Got Your Nose!Participants: USA, USSR, China? Nasser indignantly cuts off all ties with the US and asserts control over the canal. He decries American neo-Imperialism as no better than the Imperialist conduct of the British and the French. Consequently, Nasser petitions the Eastern bloc, particularly the USSR, for financial aid in such projects as the Aswan High Dam, while hinting that he may offer lucrative benefits with the Suez Canal, a solid foothold in the region, and (particularly for the USSR) a much-needed win in all this chaos. In (West) Jerusalem, Ben-Gurion and friends do a victory dance (that no person of Ben-Gurion's age should ever do), as they begin to establish settlements in Sinai. The most prominent of these are Ofira, near Sharm-el-Sheikh, and Yamit, west of Rafah [OOC: these are basically the real ones established after the Six-Day War, not an ass pull]. As far as they're concerned, it's game over and they won. The US, USSR, and maybe PRC may react as they see fit to the Egyptian actions, as well as to the right to control Sinai.

Operation Swordbreaker AKA the Invasion of North Vietnam.
South Vietnam. First Half of 1958. Military.
Soviet support for NV has been reduced greatly as it and China fight each other to find out who will be the leader of World Communism, but in this adventure of theirs, they're abandoning the same Communist nations they're trying to fight for. One of them is North Vietnam. By now SV has decided that it's time that they start taking NV way more seriously than ever, devising a plan to invade NV and reunify the nation by force, as the Soviet Fleet and Army have left NV for a while, it is a great opportunity for us to attack.
The success of this invasion however depends on the unavailability of the enemy forces stationed in Laos, Cambodia and on the border of the Vietnams. If those forces can be pinned down for long, Haiphong will be overrun. The South already has advantage in every aspect, what matters is how we employ our resources to achieve a victory.
The war would be divided into two theatres. They are Haiphong and Vinh.
NOTE: ALL OPERATIONS ARE TAKING PLACE AT ROUGHLY THE SAME TIME AS A COORDINATED EFFORT.
Haiphong Theatre: Under a massive fighter cover, almost 300 bombers fly for Haiphong. It is expected that the defense of the city will be strong, as it's a very important city. Rolling for the Bombardment of Haiphong. uvJX9Hfj
Rolling for the weather, if it's less than three than it'll be suitable for an amphibious landing, otherwise it'll have to be postponed.
Results: the aerial bombardment isn't as successful as it was thought and the waters are way too rough. Thus in March another landing is attempted of that year (the first being in January). Rolling.
As it seems, the water favors the Communists more than we had thought. Landings are cancelled of all kinds till July at least.
Vinh Theatre
The Air Force alongside the bulk of Southern Artillery begin a massive bombardment of Vinh. Rolling.
Apparently no one knows how to do their job properly and the Navy's three cruisers are called in to bomb the city. Rolling.
The Navy does a great job of bombing Vinh alongside it's support-craft (OOC: destroyers) and the Army regains it's confidence that they actually CAN do something!
Bridges are laid to cross the river, Infantry and Armor, battalions upon battalions of them, start rolling in the thousands, Battle of Vinh begins. Rolling.
The Communists give us a hard time and have retreated to some other areas that we don't know of right now, so around 5000 infantry is stationed there alongside 100 tanks while the main infantry and armored columns March to Hoang Mai.
Air Force, seriously seeking a victory by now offers help alongside the Navy, with more Southern planes moving up North to compensate for the lack of skill of the pilots to bomb Hoang Mai. Rolling.
All bombardment missions are totally scrapped for the second half of the year.
The Infantry and Armor make do without bombardments and directly assault the city of Hoang Mai. Rolling. Seems that the Communists are using the terrain well to their advantage. Thus the Rangers are called in. Lightly-armed mobile infantry, they can do the job. Also called up are M24 Chaffee tanks, these new American tanks are also put on the field for Thanh Hoa. Just like Vinh, some men are stationed in Hoang Mai to not give quarter to the Communists as Tanks and Rangers move for Thanh Hoa.
Rolling for Thanh Hoa.
A 17! The new tanks and rangers live on to their expectations, giving the Regular Infantry a good competition.
Marines now are called up, still an untested force, they're paired with the M24 Chaffee tanks and ordered to advance North to Ninh Binh which well may be our final stop for now.
Rolling for Ninh Binh.
The Armor and Marines make a good combination as well! The Marines settle-down in Ninh Binh, so do other forces in their cities. Enemy casualties are unknown, but at Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh they're thought to be moderately-heavy. These are the casualties in total as well as the numbers of those forces, and as to who is stationed where.
Casualties Report + Positions of Forces
Marines have taken almost 500 casualties and are garrisoned almost 20000 in Ninh Binh alongside ~300 tanks.
Rangers, numbering 15000 have ~500 dead and with ~350 tanks they're at Thanh Hoa.
The Infantry at Hoang Mai got a beating with around 3000 dead, they're still fighting for some outskirts apparently of that city, numbering 30000 as well as ~500 tanks.
Vinh's Infantry got almost 3000 dead too, stationed are ~35000 men and 500 tanks here as well. Like Hoang Mai, they're battling for some outskirts of the city as well.
Air Force had 100 fighters and bombers lost in total. At present some forward formations are at Vinh, the rest in the South at Hue or Da Nang. These losses are to be replaced soon.
Navy's Cruiser Saigon (more details in the Government turn about this) was seriously damaged, we suspect it is because of a submarine though reports are unclear, 3 destroyers were lost as well, with many being repaired immediately. All of them are at Hue and Da Nang.
The Militia of Vietnam crossed in three miles into Laos, 300000 of them, out of the total 350000 so as to engage any communist force there and then.
In total some 100 tanks have been lost as well throughout the campaign, however, they can be replaced easily.·································

South Vietnam. First Half of 1958. Forest FiresFires are spreading on the border with the Communists, the South though doesn't suffer anything as no civilians live in this province of SV but they do put the fires out. Diplomatic Front South Vietnam is absolutely outraged when it hears news from frontline military intelligence that at least 300000 more Chinese ( Carlos III) and 80000 Russian ( Victor Katz) soldiers have arrived in Vietnam and rumors are going around that even more are stationed in neighboring Laos, but those numbers are not confirmed yet. South Vietnam had already by now correctly guessed that Chinese support would further embolden the Communists, and by now it is evident. More reports later follow that the dirty Russians have brought their heaps of scrap barely able to float back to Haiphong The people rejoice as they hear the news that the Communists are breaking apart themselves. Ngo Dinh Diem at this moment remarked: "It was evident to us from the beginning that this political and economic system is not just flawed, but dangerous to the lives of millions of people all over the world. We hope that these governments will soon collapse on their own, under their own weight. And if they don't, the Free World will bring them down for them". Soon the news came from Hungary that the Communists got nailed to their coffins against a ragtag militia that wasn't properly organized either. SV quickly diverted many guns and funding to them, seeing that Free Hungary would eventually cause disruption in Eastern/Occupied Europe, SV publicly supports Free Hungary as well. Economy Reports are coming in from economists saying that the country has printed a banknote too many that has caused inflation, if this inflation is not reined in it'll wreck the economy. Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem gets immediately to work, first, he accepts the American ( Tolbethessar) offer of the correction of the balance of payments in order to get at least that thing straight, knowing our American allies, that shouldn't be a problem. Furthermore, he starts to decrease government spending and offers the private sector, by now capable of supporting the national economy, to actively start supporting the development of the nation. It is expected that these Capitalists would jump in head-over-heels in an economy that is still going upwards. The Minister of Finance is instructed to raise taxes across the board, but not too many, and the Minister of Public Affairs is ordered to launch a propaganda campaign about why the people should pay more taxes. But after that, even more instructions are sent out to save the economy, the instructions being actually advice from American and Vietnamese economists, the State Bank and the Ministry of Finance are instructed to retain a higher credit reserve value against the loans circulating out there. The second thing is to issue Government Bonds that the people and the corporations are encouraged to buy in order to shrink the money supply even more. The third thing they do is to tackle overexpenses being incurred by government officials and to keep a better eye on them so that no one goes on a spending-spree under the government's eye. Spending is of course going to take place by them, but too much of that will require serious explanations. The last thing to be done is when the money from the Americans and the Bonds starts to get back in the country, it will be deposited in huge investment funds from which even government officials would have difficulty in trying to obtain it as they'd have nothing of value in against the value of the investment fund itself, so they'd be unable from the start to buy the investment because simply put, they don't have enough money. The Government in trying to properly gear-up the Corporations would reduce some taxes for them and would provide them the resources (cash and loans and the manpower too) required to get those sectors of the economy running in which the Corporations want assistance in. Military Tanks, trucks, planes, jeeps, ships, guns, anything SV can buy at the last minute is bought from our suppliers. More emphasis however is placed on the Air Force. As the recent encounters have shown, the Southern Air Force is not fully up to the mark as was expected of it, and on the Prime Minister's own directive, the bulk of the formations are quickly going through "refreshing courses" while newer crews train harder than ever. The Navy got the better treatment comparatively, however, it too is under the eyes of the Government, it is evident that the sudden increase in naval personnel from 1955 to date brought alongside them some incompetent ones as well, that are either immediately fired or retrained, as newer ships keep being produced, though less in numbers now than the last year. The Heavy Cruisers Saigon and Nha Trang join the other two heavy cruisers, Da Nang and Hue. However the Saigon was badly damaged in the recent Bombardment of Vinh and is quickly sent back to Hue before it was too late. Marines, Armor and the Rangers got praise from the government on their performance, giving the untested special forces and airborne a good challenge. The Infantry and it's Artillery were spared a lecture however as they're the backbone of the entire Military, though Diem is "looking forward to better results from our brave infantrymen". Order of Battle for the Armed Forces of the State of Vietnam

The War Room People's Republic of China, 1st Half, 1958 Viet Bac, North Vietnam, January 1958
"Comrade Chen," "Comrade Peng," Marshal Chen Geng replies. Marshal Peng Dehuai walks into the room, followed by two soldiers. He marches towards the table. "Tell me about the current situation" "South Vietnamese bombers have bombed Haiphong and Vinh. Enemy forces have crossed the border and are engaging the Viet Minh." Marshal Chen points on the map. Marshal Peng Dehuai studies the map and contemplates for a few moments. "What do you make of all this, comrade?" "Clearly, the enemy plans to strike behind us from Haiphong while pushing North from Vinh." Marshal Peng nods. "The enemy took us by surprise. Our forces are not organised. At the moment, the enemy has the advantage. To engage them now would be futile. I believe we ought to pull our soldiers back away from the frontline to prepare a defense." Marshal Peng looks up from the map. "You are right. Send the Third Corps to help the (North) Vietnamese in Vinh. All others, prepare a defense around Hanoi. The tanks too. I will request reinforcements. Be sure to work with the Vietnamese; they know the lands better than us. The rest I shall leave to you." "All right."
As Peng Dehuai leaves, he tells a messenger, "Inform General Vo Nguyen Giap that I would like to meet him."

解放军报 Jiefang Jun Bao (Liberation Army News)
People's Republic of China, 1st Half, 1958 Commitment Level: 4 The Taiwan Reconciliation
Foreign Minister Zhou Enlai arrives for the roundtable talks. Already once exiled for a poor performance in the Geneva Conference, he cannot afford to fail again. Zhou says that China will not accept Taiwan's demands for total independence. He points to the Constitution of the PRC, which states Zhou then lists the PRC's two demands: 1. To be recognised as a legitimate nation. 2. To have Taiwan and China under a single administration He states that if these demands were not met, the PRC will not accept any deal. First Five-Year PlanIndustrialisation process: uiw0BmIm22/40 to target It seems the original goal is unattainable due to the lack of Soviet aid. The target is lowered by 20%. 22/32 to target. Following the success of setting the country on the path to state capitalism, Mao's New Economic Policy, formed in 1957, is implemented in many businesses to facilitate greater economic growth. Military ResearchSince the withdrawal of Soviet advisors in China, many Chinese professionals have to carry on the research left behind by the Soviets. The PLA Navy was most badly affected by the event. Thus, the Ministry of Machine Building forms the Ship Product Design Insititude to continue the development of the navy. The plan to convert the navy to a green-water navy continues. Development is slow, though not unexpected. Indochina
The South Vietnamese invasion of Vietnam and Laos greatly alarms the Chairman. Mao Zedong orders immediate action to prepare a counterattack into Indochina should the imperialists wander too close. Zhu De authorises another 20 Corps (1 million) to be added to the PVA. (Military organisation below) Half, along with reinforcements for those already stationed, another 1000 tanks made of old models, Soviet tanks and Type-59s, as well as an Air Wing of 100 Shenyang J-5s. Army Group 1 joins the rest of the forces around Hanoi. After informing Laos, Army Group 2 advances to Vientiane and Phonsavan, forming a front line to stop the Vietnamese militia. Mao Zedong demands that President Eisenhower ( Tolbethessar) cut all American aid to South Vietnam and to confiscate the Spartly and Paracel Islands, possibly even temporarily handing it to the ROC. Meanwhile, Chinese agents encourage the Pathet Lao to take over the Royalist government on grounds of stopping a foreign invasion and protecting their homeland. Reports say the invasion by Vietnamese militia cost the Royalists much support as they were seen as too weak. Military Organisation
People's Volunteer Army North Vietnam: 1st Army Group: Grand Marshal Chen Geng 1st Army: 200,000 men (in NV) 2nd Army: 250,000 men (deployed) 3rd Army: 250,000 men 1st Tank Battalion: 500 tanks (in NV) 2nd Tank Battalion: 500 tanks Total: 700,000 men + 1000 tanks Laos: 2nd Army Group: Grand Marshal Deng Hua 4th Army: 250,000 men (deployed) 5th Army: 250,000 men 1st Tank Battalion: 500 tanks Total: 500,000 men + 500 tanks Counter Espionage
In the Vietnams, rumors are spread around that the South Vietnamese government had set the fires in the forests between the Vietnams as preparation for their invasion of North Vietnam, which followed soon after. The rumors only add fuel to the fire (pun intended) as conspiracy theories about the fire run rampant. The rumor seems pretty convincing, in any case. Meanwhile, spies in Cambodia working with the Khmer Rouge report at least 50,000 Cambodian royalists, far outnumbering current Khmer Rouge forces. Thus, further preparation is needed. ·

USA, 1st half of 1958 Commitment Level: Holding at 3 First, let get this out of the way... Northeast Modern Africa Proposal (progress thus far 19, leak tally 53) Round 4 (Prog, then Leak) XEaXwtEbA 4 is rolled, and then a 6 is rolled so the progress tally is 23, leak tally is 77 now.Counter-Espionage Roll (in lieu of having a Space Race Roll)An attempt is made to subtract from the leak tally to contain and restrain the data that is at risk of being spilled, such as secretive couriers and stronger encryption is used. A 4 is rolled, the leak tally is now moved down to 73.Military ResearchThe first nuclear-powered submarine armed with long-range strategic missiles, USS George Washington (SSBN-598), is under construction, but a decision from the collaboration between the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of the Navy (both within the Pentagon), urges an acceleration of USS George Washington. The quality of the work shall remain unaffected at the expense of rising costs, funded by supplemental spending within the discretionary budget. The extent of how far ahead the schedule is being pushed will be determined by the roll. If a 6 or 5 is rolled, the sub will be ready by end of this phase. If a 4 or 3 is rolled, the construction speedup is halfway successful, being ready to launch in Dec 1958 (at the end of the next upcoming phase). If a 2 or 1 is rolled, the schedule fails to shift from the original date of June 1959 (at the end of 1st half of 1959). A 4 is rolled; the effect is that USS George Washington will be completed by the end of this year (the next phase). 2 more subs from: Wiki linkAt the same location in Groton, CT another submarine in the same class of USS George Washington is being built by the General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corporation. USS Patrick Henry (SSBN-599) -- Laid down on May, 27 1958. Also, in concurrent with Patrick Henry, a third submarine of the same class is being built. This one is at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (Vallejo, California). This means the material for building USS Scamp (SSN-588), a nuclear-powered submarine but not armed with ballistic missiles, was diverted into building USS Theodore Roosevelt (SSBN-600), which delayed Scamp's progress. USS Theodore Roosevelt (SSBN-600) -- Laid down on May, 20 1958 Project Vanguard was a rather embarrassingly bad start in the Space Race for the Americans with their rockets either failing to launch properly or to separate booster stages accurately. The prior designs that was given from the Navy is now shelved. Werner Von Braun's Redstone Arsenal (the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Alabama) drew up a rocket scheme from one of their Jupiter-Cs, and named it Juno I. In the first 6 months, Von Braun launched three Juno Is in a brand-new program named the Explorers Program: Explorer 1 January 31, 1958 Explorer 2 March 5, 1958 Explorer 3 March 26, 1958 A roll will determine how many of these launches are successful. 6 will be a perfect 3 for 3, 5 or 4 will be a 2 out of 3, 3 or 2 will be only 1 out of 3, a 1 will mean that none of them made it. A 6 is rolled; the effect is: Explorer 1, 2 & 3 all have managed a good launch and America feels much better about their chances of winning the Space Race against the Soviets. Let's hope disasters won't prevent a victory in the end! Fingers crossed. Indochina Intervention:America doesn't have that many extra M24 Chaffees or M4 Shermans at this point since they're almost all given to South Vietnam. However, since America had made so many Shermans from WW2, so with some more scourging the bases and warehouses, 275 more were found and shipped to Hue by summer's end. Consider them as a gift, Frederick the Great. The freshly rotated infantry and marine units that had been stationed in Vietnam are now transported back from America into the Philippines in preparation for a full redeployment in the next phase. The two Filipino bases serving the units are Andersen Air Force Base and U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay. Also in heightened alertness, the West Pacific fleet (stationed near the south end of Vietnam) are moved into position in the Gulf of Tokin, armed and prepped for trouble. Previously in 1956, the development of HU-1s hadn't progressed much further ever since the field test went awry in front of a general. However, Trapnell over in Saigon knew that something HAD to be done about the issue of not being able to move quickly in the Vietnamese jungle, thus tanks being barely serving in the role of cavalry. Latching onto a brilliant solution, he requests that the 50 helicopters be sent to the military of South Vietnam for the purpose of "testing in a combat situation" *cough cough*. It is the hope that the helicopters will prove themselves worthwhile of consideration in research and development into full use of the United States military. He convinces Diem ( Frederick the Great) to use them, "The simple fact that helicopters are going to be super useful in the Vietnamese war, highly mobile, can carry men and guns, adaptable and powerful, that simple fact will prove the usefulness of the Hueys to the Pentagon all by itself." -----Events in the next post----- ····

Events for USA (1st half of 1958)
Mint on the MekongParticipants: SV, maybe US The "Miracle on the Mekong" is indeed going along, but it is not without complications. USA sends over to SV an economist to explain the different possible methods to contract the money supply in order to combat the rising inflation. USA notices that the ministry of fiance in the SV's government is taking the advice quite seriously and is well-pleased with its ally.
With a high-ranking diplomat attending the round table, USA hopes to see a successful negotiation occur between the two Chinas and USA. Everett F. Drumright as the official ambassador to China (Taiwan) at this time is the assisting the leading representative, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. Considering how badly PRC wants to regain the islands of Formosa and others, Drumright expects Mao to come to the table in a friendly mood to compromise. At first, the two initial demands had seems like they would be relatively a simple starting point for the negotitations (whereas they should've been mere requests but let's ignore the arrogant, fat Chinese man's laughable tone for the moment), however the Chinese went on with making further demands, quite out of line. Drumright warns Johnson that Mao must be out of his mind to try press America's buttons. The American senator, stands up from the table and coldly warns Mao about his foolish utterance: " Carlos III ... You're in no position to make such ridiculous demands. Lower your expectations or prepare yourself for disappointment." And with that said, he walks over to whisper into the little man's ear, "And if you ever think about an outright war on the nation of Vietnam in support of an intranational criminal origination... You might want to reconsider that decision, when you see American ships quite well-prepared to deliver a great storm of pain upon your silly little army, and the famous U.S. Marines redeploy onto the beaches of Vietnam. And that might be a bit too late by then. We outgun you far too easily in many ways of modern warfare, on the land, on the waters, and in the air. It would do you well to know that I do not bluff on such serious matters, you little narrow-sighted overgrown man-child!" Returned to his seat, Johnson smirks at Mao from across the table with a deadly glare in his eye. Drumright however sweats pale-facedly next to him, making his own personal feelings of nervousness rather public for everyone to see.
Finally as the year began, the arms pipeline leading from the Adriatic Sea through Yugoslavia into Hungary began operations, thus the Hungarians are becoming armed and more well-armed as months roll by. John Dulles, the Secretary of State, recognize that the secretive nature of Hungary's inquiry into a possible petition into EEC stems from fears of USSR, quite understandably. He offers that Hungary doesn't have to formally submit a petition to obtain help from the West. "We would still be willing to work with you from a more neutral framework such as a broader Non-Aligned Movement in conjunction with Josip Tito, forming your own coalition that are completely separate from the Soviets' control if that's what you're more comfortable. Or... you could directly join hands with the West and we would provide assistance in both economic development and military defense along with American troops directly working with you, if that's what you prefer. You will find us very accommodating to work with quite easily." In other countries such as Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and others, private meetings were arranged to encourage further Warsaw Pact breakaways to pop up all over Eastern Europe, pointing out how Soviets were trying brutalize Hungary into back under their thumb, directly violating the language found within the original charter of Warsaw Pact that USSR had twisted their arms into joining in. USA also encourage Yugoslavia to make its own efforts in enlisting the breakaways into forming a coalition separate from USSR's Warsaw Pact, especially Albania being the likest candidate which already had considerable frustrations and problems in complying with the organization. (OOC note: Albania had actually broke away RL in a few years from now, but that was while Hungary was crushed and forced back into the fold)
Clearly, Nasser intend to close the Suez canal to the West. This is in direct violation of the international agreement for many nations being able to trade overseas in using the Suez Canal that was well-established for nearly 100 years. There is much precedent in having the canal being treated as widely available to neutral and peaceable nations, but Nasser is threatening all of that. Very well, if the West cannot be given access through the Suez Canal zone, then neither shall Egypt have it until then. USA requests that UK and France joins them in establishing a double blockade surrounding Egypt in both the Mediterranean sea and the Gulf of Aden. This time, the intervention will not involve violating Egypt's soil or sovereign waters. You have GM permission to say something like this: The US invites Britain and France to join its task force. Britain has dispatched a group of vessels, and allowed use of its bases on Cyprus. On the other hand, France is concerned about its increasingly growing Algeria problem, but expresses its public support nonetheless. Both countries express their hope that at the end, the canal may be restored to the Suez Canal Company, its lawful (and, totally coincidentally, Anglo-French) owner prior to Nasser's nationalization. Eisenhower gave a public speech to be televised around the world, including throughout the whole Arab world in explaining the second intervention in the Suez Canal crisis (or third if including the Israeli one). Pointing out that America had approached Egypt with great reasonableness, gave its weight behind it up against UK & France regarding to the prior invasion, and then in presence of a large international crowd, America made a very generous compromise that would have accommodated both sides well. Egypt would receive a large share of proceeds coming from the Suez Canal Company while it remains officially in the guardianship of UK & France for the sake of the entire trading world. America would also be funding improvements in Egypt to compensate fairly in account of the surrender of the nationalization. Eisenhower reminds the traditional-minded Arabs that in a typical situation: in spite the parent's entreating a child to cease, when the child continue to misbehave, then the parent has an obligation to pick him up and lay the child down on the knee and give a firm smack on the rear. The father is responsible to discipline the son for his foolishness. Likewise, in this...Nasser had got himself in trouble with the owners of the canal, and was being invaded as a result. Being saved from his troubles, Nasser decided to repay the kindness with churlishness as if he's Nabal of the old times. And then in yet one more complication, Nasser sought out another fight unwisely and lost badly in an actual war, albeit brief as it was. At the end of all of this, he as a child pouts for he has not what he craves for. Nasser's childish tantrums should not be tolerated. As proof of his actions, Nasser cannot be trusted to behave reasonably as he would've if he was mature in his manhood otherwise. This speech is intended to discredit Nasser's reputation completely with the facts stemming from the Suez Canal Crisis still unfolding in the present. TL:DR USA & UK is blockading and cutting off Egypt completely. Egypt relies heavily on not just the canal but also its ports for needed materials and products. And as for landwise connections, Egypt doesn't really engage in trade or transport on land with the rest of Africa, except for a weak link in railroads leading south to Kenya via Sudan, and as for the Asiatic land connection... well Israel pretty much made it impossible for Egypt now. So no touching EgyptBall's clay but no in or out for him either.

North Vietnam 1958, 1st HalfMilitary
The year opens with massive fires along the border with the South, causing plenty of damage. As the government redirects water supplies and puts the fires out, almost all fingers are pointed at the South setting them as an attempt to distract the North, given the war preparations on both sides recently. Those fears are only confirmed in everyone's eyes when the South actually decides to invade. Fortunately for the North, the army's preparedness to fight a defensive war and a massive influx of Chinese troops and tanks, the losses are not as bad as they would have been otherwise. Nonetheless, Haiphong is battered, Vinh (5000 casualties), Thanh Hoa (7500 casualties), Ninh Binh (2000 casualties), Hoang Mai (5000 casualties), and other cities are conquered, and North Vietnam is facing the most dire crisis of its short life. A massive conscription force is created at once. 500,000 paramilitary soldiers are drafted, and other conscripts are sent into the other branches. All spare military funds are used to buy more hardware from China and the rest of the Warsaw Pact, especially anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. The Politburo and the rest of the high government leadership leaves Hanoi and goes into the mountains to avoid being captured should the south seize Hanoi. Plans are made to attack all the conquered areas from the west, starting with Ninh Binh and Hoang Mai. To begin, all available planes are sent to bombard the Southern positions, in conjunction with an assault by most of the North's artillery pieces: Aerial:Zq_uDsCa (was a 12 before dice went crazy)
Artillery: (was a 7 before dice went crazy)
The aerial force suffers against Southern air defences, losing 65 planes, but the poor artillery has no clue what it's doing, losing 10% of the pieces used in the bombardments. Nonetheless, the military counts on the numerical superiority of the forces slated to attack to pick up the slack. 60,000 troops of the infantry, plus 300 tanks and 25,000 members of the paramilitary are to attack Hoang Mai, while another 50,000 infantrymen and 200 tanks are to advance on Ninh Binh. In addition, half of the navy's submarine fleet is sent in a surprise attack to the South's port at Hue to damage as many destroyers and cruisers as they can. Attack on Hoang Mai: (was a 15)Attack on Ninh Binh: (was a 13)Attack on Hue Port: (was a 12)Even with nearly triple the amount of troops, only a narrow victory is won at Hoang Mai, with the pricetag of 10,000 casualties and 100 tanks. The advance on Ninh Binh is stalled, suffering 8,500 casualties and 90 tanks, and the attack on Hue has unsatisfactory results as well, with only minor damage dealt to a Southern cruiser and a destroyer at the cost of 5 submarines. Determined to maintain the pressure, another 20,000 infantrymen and 10,000 paramilitary troops are sent to reinforce the Ninh Binh contingent, and another assault is made: hqfheIv3Once more, a narrow victory is scored, this time at the cost of 14,000 casualties and another 80 tanks. After time for rest and time for replacements to fill the ranks, 10,000 troops are left to guard against any leftover Southern forces as the rest of the Ninh Binh troops plan to march on Thanh Hoa. But before this, another bombardment is ordered from the air force (the artillery is spared due to its humiliation earlier): Once more, the air force falls victim to the superior Southern defences and planes. 75 planes are sacrificed, and future bombardments are cancelled indefinitely. Deciding to proceed anyway, the Ninh Binh troops launch their attack south on Thanh Hoa, supplied with even more anti-tank weaponry than usual: A more decisive victory is scored at this battle, with the small Southern contingent of roughly 15,000 troops swept aside, but their tanks eliminate 150 of the North's own. In the final attack in the first half of the year, 30,000 troops from the Hoang Mai contingent reinforce those at Thanh Hoa, and an assault is made on Vinh: Another 17. Once more, a narrow victory is won and Vinh is seized before the army stops for the time being, losing 20,000 casualties. The approaches to the city and the city itself are heavily fortified for the renewed attack that will soon descend upon the city. 250,000 paramilitary troops join the 100,000 troops and 250,000 Chinese soldiers already in Laos to guard the Ho Chi Minh trail. The parts closest to the South's invading forces are sabotaged, and maintainment work is continued on the parts most important to the Vietnamese and Chinese troops stationed there. 100,000 more paramilitary troops are sent into the reconquered areas to help hold them and to help flush out any lingering Southern troops. Reconstruction work on Haiphong and other bombarded cities is given priority, and air defences are installed in case the South's planes decide to come back. Replacements for the lost planes, submarines, and tanks are ordered from abroad and/or produced locally. The artillery and air force are subjected to intense training to improve on the disastrous performances so far. Order of Battle:PAVN: 400,000 (plus 450,000 Chinese troops) VPPF: 825,000 VPAF: 65,000 VPN: 45,000
Total: 1,785,000
Domestic Affairs
Although the government does its best to continue with the Three Year Plan on schedule, many domestic issues are put on the backburner so that the country can be militarily prepared. Much of the country's food production is taken and used as rations for the growing military, with agricultural subsidies and farm expansions to partially offset the losses. The military-industrial system undergoes more development to produce more arms, for the government's plan for arming the population is being enstated. Citizens with a proven loyalty to the state, especially those in areas vulnerable to Southern takeover, are given arms and ordered to harass invading forces if they are overtaken by the South.
Many medics are sent to the border areas to help treat all the wounded soldiers, and more medicines are imported to treat them and the rest of the populace. Oil prospectors are sent across the country to find new oil supplies to keep North Vietnam's military equipment fueled, and for a potential source of revenue. Damaged infrastructure in the war-torn areas is rebuilt as quickly as possible, and is expanded into the countryside to facilitate military transportation if needed. The education system continues unchaged, but many vocational students are sent into the military for more education and to put their skills to more immediate use. Government expenses are cut wherever possible, and corrupt officials are sacked, as tax rates across the country are slightly raised to gain more funds.

Правда(1958 1st Half)
Commitment: II->III Vyacheslav Molotov to be Khrushchev's SuccessorAfter the obvious failure in Indochina and Hungary, Khrushchev admitted his mistakes and said he would take all the bullets. Earlier this year, the former leader of the Soviet Union decided it was time to step down from power, and gave a final speech at the Red Square. Right after the speech, a bunch of angry citizens began to chant 'Justice to Khrushchyovka! Justice to Khrushchyovka! Justice to Khrushchyovka!' And soon several hundreds began to join in the shouts, all demanding a fair trial for the now-criminalized ex-Commissar. Khrushchev, with his face bright red, had to quickly leave the Red Square.
After the historically meaningful speech, the crowd now wonders one tihng; Who shall be the next successor to power? Three people came to mind; Georgy Malenkov, the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union was the first. Vyacheslav Molotov, famous for his opposition of Nikita Khrushchev, the First Deputy Chariman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union was the second. The third was obviously Georgy Zhukov, the Commander of Operation in Indochina. Anyone could become the next leader of the revolution.
But all of this changed when Georgy Malenkov declared his support for Molotov, with the assumed condition of himself being the Head Deputy Chairman. Zhukov was in Vladivostok- Way too far away for any political actions to be taken- and had to accept Vyacheslav Molotov as the next leader of the Soviet Union. The ambitious General, who wanted to become the Commissar himself, angrily resigned his position as tahe Commander of Operation in Indochina, and decidided to go back to Moscow, to participate in the grand game of power and poltics. Molotov, who now became the Commissar of the Communist Party, appointed Leonid Govorov, who seemed rather uninterested in politics, as Zhukov's successor and decided to appoint Aleksandr Vasilevsky as the Chief of Army Operations.

IndochinaAfter Moltov's rise to power, not much have changed in Indochina. Zhukov went to try his own luck in Moscow, and Govorov took Zhukov's place, and Vasilevsky took Govorov's place. The rest remains the same, with all the forces staying in Indochina. Here's the army template.

Second Half of 1958
We've made it through one half of the year. And now, the second half rolls in.
Since all turns were submitted in a timely manner (or at worst, a couple of hours late), I'm not gonna single anyone out for particularly harsh smiting. Only minor plagues, assigned based on my whim.
With that in mind, events:
Curse of the Pharaohs
Participants: USA, USSR
Nasser finds that his actions draw popular support for now, even as the economy is harmed. He is also heartened by the Soviet offer of support.
Nasser chooses to dig in. He points out the disdainful hypocrisy of the Americans, claiming to support freedom while backing the Imperialist aims of Britain, France, and the "Zionist project". He holds mass rallies in Cairo, which are broadcast over radio throughout the Middle East. This is met by popular support in Syria, Iraq, and Libya, whose governments take a symbolic stance on Nasser's side. Libya, in particular, offers discounted rates on its ports for Egypt-bound commerce, while Syria secretly informs the Soviets that their naval forces would be welcome dock at Syria's mediterranean ports.
Israel places its troops on a raised alert, and petitions both its traditional ally, France, and its new friend, America, for supplies and support in case of a regional conflict. It also offers use of its own territory as a staging ground for western forces.
The US may: 1. Withdraw its blockade and try to negotiate a solution - can we still be friends? 2. Maintain the blockade, potentially expanding it to the Libyans and other offenders, and with one reaction or another regarding Israel. Also look into some kind of canal alternative if this is done - whether that means a railroad through Turkey and the Shah's Iran or through Israel is up to you. 3. Mount a limited offensive to seize the canal. Given the balance of power, it will be assumed automatically that such an offensive succeeds. 4. Mount a broader offensive to occupy Egypt itself - a one-die roll will be needed for this (1 = total failure, 2-4 = successfully seize the canal zone, 5 = successfully seize the canal zone and Alexandria, 6 = total collapse of Egypt). If this option is selected, and commitment in Indochina is raised to 4 or above while US troops still occupy Egypt proper, America will face a 3 minimum no-confidence roll.
The USSR may:
1. Pressure Nasser & co to negotiate - it's premature to fight. 2. Deploy advisors to the region, potentially also a small force from the Black Sea Fleet to Syria. 3. Mount a naval offensive to break the American blockade - if this option is selected, a regular battle roll must be made. USSR can find details on the size of the Black Sea Fleet (which would be the attacking force) online. 4. Mount a total offensive in the region, against the American blockade, the British colony of Cyprus, and Israel. This will lower commitment in Indochina to 2 immediately, and prevent it from being raised above 3 until the end of 1959.
If interested, the US and USSR will be allowed to have a negotiation-style thread before they decide on this issue, for posturing and statements.
Chinese Reconciliation
Participants: US, PRC
The negotiations are accelerated to a full summit. We will now be using a negotiation thread. The thread will run for the duration of the phase. In it, each party (PRC, USA, GM-ROC), will be allowed exactly one post per day to simulate the negotiation. Whatever agreement is or isn't reached is the summit's outcome.
Rusting Curtain
Participants: USA, USSR, PRC
The Eastern European situation is not looking good. In addition to Hungary holding firm, Albania breaks off from the USSR. Under the staunchly communist Hoxha, it makes some limited overtures to Yugoslavia, but it also reaches out to PR China for support. The Albanians deem Mao, not Molotov, to be the truer steward of the Revolution, and hope to see some aid come from this.
Meanwhile, while some underground organizing occurs throughout the Soviet bloc, and dissidents are arrested from Bulgaria to Czechoslovakia, the porous border between East and West Berlin makes East Germany far too vulnerable. Rallies for democracy and German reunification are held in East Germany, with the most prominent ones in Leipzig. Anti-Communist organizers tend to disappear when authorities come for them, only to pop back up a few days later.
The KGB has information suggesting that these operations are supported at least in part by the British in West Berlin.
While Albania seems to be a lost cause USSR may: 1. Allow negotiations on German reunification, triggering a 3-minimum confidence roll 2. Undertake limited operations to contain the uprising, such as reinforcing the East German Stasi and tightening the border of West Berlin 3. Send in the Red Army to stop the revolt before it begins. This will prevent an increased commitment in Indochina to 4 or higher for 1 phase. This also prevents a full offensive in the Middle East.
Moreover, Russia may attack Hungary. If it does this, but does not send the army in Germany, it will be limited from increasing Indochina commitment to 4 or above for 1 phase, and prevented from making a full offensive in the Middle East. Attacking both East Germany and Hungary will require an immediate reduction of Indochina commitment to 2.
The PRC may: 1. Leave Albania alone 2. Send advisors to Albania, suffering a 2-point setback in the Five-Year plan now, but opening up possible economic and diplomatic opportunities later.
The US may: 1. Support continuing covert agitation efforts throughout the Eastern bloc. Roll 2 standard dice for effectiveness in each remaining country (of: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria), where a 12 means mass protests break out in that country. This will be in lieu of America's espionage roll. 2. Stand by and let things happen as they will.
South Vietnam's economy
Participants: SV
The policies undertaken by South Vietnam have proven effective in bringing inflation back under control. SV may pat itself on the back.

SV. Last Six Months of 1958
Diplomacy Diem asked the world to help them fight the Communists. As news was reaching far and wide that the Southern Army was being engaged by the North, supplies started flowing in from the rest of the world to Vietnam. By the end of the year, SV had accumulated supplies that it could use for one year given the present level of the fighting.
Seeing the situation in Cambodia and Laos and not wanting to lose them the Government sends a few hefty stacks of cash and some locally-manufactuered guns to the neighbors.
Internal Affairs
At least 200000 more Militia are recruited, but they receive guns only a three weeks into the training. Also recruited are 70000 Infantry and 50000 Marines and Rangers each. However they too get to use actual weaponry by the end of the year as there weren't many guns to go around with. The requirements for passing out in the Militia are retained at 4 weeks, and in the Army and Marines as 12 weeks. Diem wants quality over quantity, and the Army shares his views.
Corrupt officials aren't just sacked here, they're shovelled into the Militia regardless of their previous status and grades. This way the Militia grows by 10000 more.
Vietnamese Corporations meanwhile gear up in their effort in their own way. The industries start producing small and medium arms locally like the FAL, the MP44, the MAS-38, the M1A1 and the Thompson SMG. Some start building barracks for the new volunteers. Some start cultivating more farmland to feed the soldiers.
Aftermath of the Southern Invasion and the Build-Up of Forces:
The South was content by June that the North was retreating towards Hanoi but with the supply lines still not being fully under control and with some logistical issues being still faced, the wrath of the North was unleashed upon us. One after the other, the cities taken were assaulted and though stories of heroism were created, the situation was dire by early-July, 1958
Ninh Binh garrison lost 10000 men and 100 tanks. Vinh lost 10000 men and 100 tanks. Thanh Hoa lost 10000 men and 150 tanks. Hoang Mai lost 10000 men and 200 tanks.
The Vinh units retreated South into the country and was later reformed.
Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa units had to move quickly to the Port of Thanh Hoa before they were surrounded and killed off.
Hoang Mai's units moved to Hill 293, which is situated East of that city.
Reinforcements:
Thanh Hoa's port was used to deliver more tanks, Rangers and Marines to it. Almost 200 tanks and later 10000 Marines and Rangers each helped the situation from falling apart. In total there are now 40000 men and 600 tanks.
Similarly the Hoang Mai Army, stuck on Hill 293 was reinforced with 30000 men and 300 tanks, bringing the total to 60000 men and 600 tanks.
Vinh's Army, well it was to form the nucleus of the new Liberation Army. In total were scrounged 200000 men and 600 tanks. Of these were 120000 Infantry, 40000 Marines and 40000 Rangers. They were provided with just about everything an army could hope to have. Artillery support, CASEVAC, MEDEVAC, Air support, Naval support, as well as trucks upon trucks loaded with supplies, food and fuel.
