At last, it's time to start another game of Diplomacy. Map: Full rules: drive.google.com/file/d/1jpozONC_Hflb7L0srZS6L1MlKhPVF9n3/view A short summary of the important rules/winning conditions (partially taxed from Transfermium ): Each player gets to control 2 powers. There are three pairs that are always picked together (France/Rhine, Republicans/Federalists, Canada/Britain), and the other 6 are picked so that each player has one power in Europe and one in America, but not two powers on the same continent. The other 6 are: Europe: Denmark, Austria, Russia North America: New Spain, Cherokee, Shawnee To win, you must capture 18 SCs, with 12 of them being on the same continent. It's possible for 2 players to do this, which results in a Double Win. Only 2 builds are allowed per year per player (4 in total for both countries). There are 4 starred major harbor provinces. Capturing one will allow you to build there. The Shawnee and Cherokee are not allowed to build fleets, even in a major harbor. However, they are allowed to build units in any SC in North America if they control it. New Spain gets a home SC in Cadiz, even though they are an American power. They can also build from Madrid. Warsaw may be a build SC for either France or Rhine, and France can also build from Montreal. The Republicans and Federalists can build from each other's home SCs, and both can build from Savannah. Britain and Canada can both build from Toronto. Russia and Denmark can both build from Stockholm. I highly encourage you all to read the full rules, since there are other things in them that you ought to know before starting. Now, for the country selection (make sure to pick 2 if you're not getting a pair): France/Rhine: Frederick the GreatBritain/Canada: Victor Katz Republicans/Federalists: EuropyrealmAustria: Carlos IIIRussia: Dr. Hendrei Gromsinger Denmark: tpc New Spain: Dr. Hendrei Gromsinger Shawnee: tpc Cherokee: Carlos III

I'd like Russia and New Spain, please. Taking up a nice corner position, albeit with some interesting drawbacks.

I haven't played dippy in a bit, so I favor the easy corner positions on that count, but you have a point. I'll still stick with my opposite-corners setup, because I'm a chicken.

Do anybody think USA (the Republicans/Federalists pair) would be somewhat easier to handle than a split position or as France/Rhine? I'm thinking of recommending USA for Europyrealm as something not too difficult for a beginner. Up to you, Europyrealm, if you want to pick that one or not, what do you think?

To my eyes, the US combo does look the simplest and most straightforward

USA in this case is a pair of Republicans & Federalists. Keep in mind that this "Republican" faction is actually an old party that doesn't exist today. The old Democrat-Republican party back then in 1812 has no real connection to either Democrats or Republicans today. In this era back then... Think of more like Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton if you wish to look at the biography of some people during that time. People were fighting between Federalist and anti-Federalist in how to establish a national government versus how to respect the sovereignty of the local states. It's NOT required for playing Diplomacy! Just some background blah-blah stuff-stuff yada-yada.
