Tuesday, January 9 - just past midnight (right after the Presidential election)[President-Elect Yulia Meyers - Meyers for Dagestan Campaign Party, Dinamo Stadium, Makhachkala]Already when the exit polls for the Presidential race were published, 2 hours ago, Dinamo Stadium had erupted in cheers. From that point on, the crowds were engaged in song and dance, sometimes western rock standards, sometimes folk music of the north Caucasus. After the formal race call, and Yulia's 11 PM speech, politicians - including the new President-Elect - had joined the dancing. Now, adrenaline high and face slightly red, Yulia's knees decided that she had danced enough. She began to walk out, spotting Karimov on her way. "Abdullah, walk with me," she invited him.

"Right after you", Abdullah said smiling as he walked a step behind her. It was very clear that Meyers was loving this new phase of her life, and was confident with the role she was about to play in the future of this new nation. Abdullah wondered deep down "huh, talking to me at this event obviously seem to be of great importance. Better be all ears right now, don't wanna do anything dumb."

[President-Elect Yulia Meyers - Dinamo Stadium]Yulia walked onto the makeshift stage on which she'd spoken earlier, to fetch her purse. "Hell of a day, this. The people are even more excited than they were in '97," she observed to Abdullah. "In a slightly different timeline, it might've been you in my shoes."Yulia, having shed her heels earlier to dance, now put them back on with a measure of regret. "Metaphorical shoes, that is, not literal. These things are torture devices."

[ PM Karimov - Dinamo Stadium]
"Yeah, it's a damn good thing that us men don't have to bother with these shoes" Abdullah chuckled.
"And well I really don't know if I had been in your metaphorical shoes. I've never seen anyone this much popular in this part of the world. So I guess this was always your calling"

[President-Elect Yulia Meyers - Dinamo Stadium -> Dakhadayev Street]Yulia chuckled. She could only wish women would be spared this particular form of suffering. As for her popularity... "Well, I can think of several men who've reached this stature."The feminist dimension of the Yulia Meyers story was impossible to ignore. She had shattered the glass ceiling again and again in Dagestan. "But really, this kind of popularity isn't just about one person - it's about a movement, and I'm the symbol for that movement. There was no rule saying that Julia Meyers, American accountant, was destined to become a popular hero in the North Caucasus. It could've just as easily been yourself, or Tarlan or Victor. It really makes you think about the oddness of our world."She pronounced her own name (the American version of it) with an exaggerated American accent (after all those years, her Russian normally only had hints of her foreign birth), for dramatic effect. Stepping into the street, the duo were washed over with the cold evening air of the Dagestani winter. In the throngs of supporters, body heat had drowned out the cold, but here, one could feel the January weather.
