Welcome to the background thread for our Korean War RP. Here, I will put up everything you need to know before we start. I'm going to ask, politely, that none of you post in this thread.
The Setting
Korea, duh!
We'll be taking our aim at the Korean Peninsula, starting in the year 1949. I'm going to assume you know the history in broad strokes, so I'll skip that, and go straight to the countries.
USA
The US is an emerging colossus, standing tall after WWII. In 1949, it faces the task of establishing just what kind of hegemon it will be, and of defending its hegemony from the Reds. Note that it currently maintains, among other things, a military occupation in Japan.
USSR
The Soviet Union wants to expand communism and its influence, including vis-a-vis the USA. It's come out of WWII battered, but far stronger than any of the old powers of Europe. Joseph Stalin is in his golden years now, but he's still Joseph Stalin
PR China
At this point, Mao Zedong has all but won the Chinese Civil War. He must still deal with the remnants of the Nationalists (and that could take a while, if he wants to take Formosa as well), not to mention the various cliques and bands active in the Chinese hinterlands. However, the Chinese Communist Party has a bright future.
South Korea
Currently a poor country, but freedomized, South Korea needs to figure out what it is. Alienating America is a bad idea.
North Korea
Right now, North Korea is new to the world, not yet the hermit state of the 21st century. Kim Il-Sung needs to consolidate his power, and maintaining the support of his fellow commies abroad will help.
The following are "expansion" powers that will be added if they're needed.
The Commonwealth
For purposes of this RP, we will treat the following countries as one unit - the Commonwealth. Fallen far since the heyday of the British Empire, they still are a serious force.
The Republic of China
It's probably too late for the KMT to hold onto the mainland, but its retreat to Formosa could take on a different character from OTL. And who knows, maybe a comeback is possible?
The ECSC
If we must, we will pretend that the European Coal and Steel Community runs a unitary foreign policy. Out of the ruins of WWII, these countries will have only a limited projection of power to Korea, but both France and the Netherlands still have Asian colonies, so who knows?
