Pixel Soldiers: The Great War is currently on sale for a generous price of nothing on the Play Store, so I thought I'd write a review of it for those interested.
Pixel Soldiers: The Great War is a turn-based strategy game where you participate in individual battles of WW1 either as the Entente or the Central Powers.
The gameplay is simple and balanced. There aren't many game mechanics and the units on each side are more or less the same. The objective is to hold certain points by the end of the battle.
Each unit has a line of sight which also affects their range. All infantry dig trenches after remaining idle for two turns. Artillery damages structures after several hits.
All infantry and calvary units have two attacks: ranged or melee charge. Ranged is your normal attack. Melee charges deal damage and pushes the enemy out of the tile, but only if it succeeds. Otherwise, you only suffer heavy casualities.
Units can also become disordered or, when their morale is low, routed. Disordered units are more vulnerable, while routed units will retreat and run.
Battles can take place over multiple days, and movement stalls at night. Line of sight is decreased significantly and soldiers may become disordered while moving in the dark. It is a great time to organise your forces, especially when on the offensive.
There are also officers, who are randomly generated and given to you on certain battles. They provide buffs to their assigned unit, can be reassigned and carry over to the next battle.
Leadership points, which replenish every turn, are used to reorganise disordered and routing units as well as to make your units move further, reassign officers and recover unit strength.
The campaign involves a series of battles which, depending on your performance, leads closer or further from victory.
The game has a good map variety and terrain is, obviously, also very important. The terrain influences your line of sight and greatly affects attack and defense.
Overall, it is a really good WW1 strategy game. There are no quick and easy victories. Men must be sacrificed in order to take or hold your objectives. A highly recommended strategy game.
